Open Letters was developed in the early months of the new millennium by a loose coalition of editors, writers, and designers from the United States and Canada. It was (and is) intended as a twin-barrelled experiment, both in a new kind of direct, honest, immediate first-person reporting and writing; and in new methods of internet publishing.

Our first letter, by Chana Shvonne Williford, was published on June 19, 2000; since then we've published thirty-five open letters and four conversations.
